I'm often asked "What should I wear?"  That question has many answers because everyone's personality and wishes are different.  Here are a few suggestions to help you make the right choice for you.

The most important thing to remember is to be yourself and wear what is comfortable.  If you normally dress casually, you will not be comfortable in a business suit or formal dress.  Of course, if you are planning a wedding, then usually, however not always formal attire is prevalent.

You also want to wear clothing that fits properly.  If something is too tight, chances are you will be self conscious and constantly adjusting.  Also, wearing something that is too loose or big is not flattering.

There was a time when the white tee shirt with jeans was the most popular look.  Same with the light blue shirt with khakis.  Although these looks are still considered classics, there are a few things you may consider to be a little more trendy.  Maybe you could add an additional color or pattern in a scarf, jacket, vest or even jewelry.  The beauty of accessories is you can bring an assortment with you and change up your look as you go.

Now the opportunities of what to wear goes way beyond those written above.  Women if you want to go with a totally feminine look, consider a dress or skirt and top.  Again bring jackets or sweaters with you to change the look.  Men your options are open as well.  Consider bringing a casual sports jacket with you and a scarf, if that is your look.  Or a tee shirt with a vest or leather jacket.  The options for everyone is endless.  It all depends on what is going to show your personality.

Consider your surroundings.  If we are shooting at the beach, you may want to go with very casual clothing, however it is not the only option.  A long, flowing dress can be beautiful with the ocean as a backdrop.  If we are shooting in the city, you may want to go with a more urban look, such as a skirt or skinny jeans with boots or heels.  If this is not your style, again go with maybe a dress that is structured or flowing.

Color is very important.  First and foremost, wear a color that you feel is flattering on you and you feel comfortable in.  Again, consider your surroundings.  If we are shooting in a park or near a forest, you may want to stay away from black or green as you will have a tendency to blend into the background.  White, by itself can actually be a bit harsh.  The eye of the observer may be drawn to the white in the image rather than your face.  Add a jacket or sweater in a different color to offset the white.  (An exception of course is a bride.  Brides always look beautiful in white.)   Another option is to try a few pastels to see what looks best.  On the other side, bold colors can be striking, especially if you keep it to a top or scarf.  Black works in certain situations and can be very dramatic, however again it depends on the surroundings and your own natural coloring.  If you want to wear black, consider adding another color with it.  The only colors to stay away from are bright neon colors.

You may add patterns as long as they aren't too distracting to the image.   A floral dress or top is beautiful as long as it is not too bold.  Plaids and stripes can also be used.  Of course remember, for the sake of the image, do not mix your patterns.  It's better to stick with one and keep the rest of your outfit plain.

Family portraits or more than one person.  Now this can get a little more complicated, however it shouldn't.  One thing to remember is everyone does not have to wear the exact same thing (as in white shirt with jeans).  In fact they shouldn't.  Each individual should wear what they are comfortable in.  There should only be one pattern in a group.  Maybe identical floral dresses on two young sisters is sweet, however keep the rest of the family in plain outfits.  You can mix and match with different shirts, jackets, sweaters. pants, skirts etc.  The key is to keep it pleasing to the eye.  The best way to do this is to choose your colors.  Three different main colors always looks great.  One person could have on a red shirt with navy pants and someone else could have on a navy sweater with grey pants and maybe a red scarf.  The possibilities are endless.  If you are concerned with what colors look best together, search on Google for coordinating colors.  I've posted a family picture below just to give you an idea, where they chose pink, navy and white.

Avoid wearing any clothing with large logos or lettering as this can be distracting.  An exception to this would be if a couple or family has a school, business etc. that is part of their story.

Lastly something else to consider is if you are planning to display your family portrait on your wall in your home or office, consider the color palette of the room.  It would be nice if your portrait blended.  Of course if you are considering a black and white portrait, then this isn't necessary.

If you are planning a family portrait with a newborn, please keep your clothes and color palette very simply.  Our main focus is the parent's or parents' face(s) and the newborn.  Clothing is very secondary.

Now a few suggestions for makeup and hair.  Please keep it natural unless you are used to wearing a more dramatic look.  I can always "add" a little makeup in post processing, however it's best and much more natural looking if you come prepared.  Even if you are not used to wearing any makeup, a little is always suggested to enhance your features.  One problem I sometimes see is black eyeliner under the eye.  This not only closes in your eyes, but can also create dark shadows.  Even if this is your normal look, please avoid for the photo shoot.
